MC&A’s Fall Festival with Shriners Hospitals for Children 2013

A spirited team of MC&A Associates spread some holiday cheer at Shriners Hospitals for Children in Honolulu by hosting a Fall Festival for the patients November 26.

Over 25 patients and their families were amazed to find their everyday Recreation Room transformed into a Fall wonderland filled with lights, leaves and country charm. The children were delighted to have their faces decorated with their favorite characters at the facepainting booth and to win prizes at the many Fall themed games. Arts and crafts stations were set up where the kids were able to create their own suncatchers and quilt squares. A Photo Op area with a Fall theme allowed families to take memorable professional portraits which they placed into frames they decorated themselves at the frame craft. Kids were also able to make their own scarecrow friend that they were able to take back to their rooms.

Colorful sweetened popcorn and other snacks were served as well as a cupcake decorating table where everyone was able to the create their own cupcake turkey. A treat that looked as good as they tasted. Everything was washed down with a refreshing apple cider – the perfect Fall beverage.

Throughtout the event, magician extraordinaire – Alan Arita, walked among the kids and astounded them with his amazing slight-of-hand tricks. The day closed with a spellbinding performance by Alan with a little help from some of the patients and their families.

The heartwarming event was a special gift for both the children and MC&A Associates alike with memories that would last a lifetime.

MC&A Summer Community Service 2013

On August 24, 2013, MC&A, Inc.’s Honolulu office participated in a community service project that was done in conjunction with our annual employee picnic on Oahu.

Partnering with us on this project was Malama Maunalua, a nonprofit organization focused on improving the ocean watershed area that spans from Portlock to Diamond Head on the east and south side of Oahu. This year’s project centered on Pulama Wai (Caring for our Cherished Waters), the focus of which seeks to reduce land based garbage, debris, silt and runoff into our oceans from our neighborhood canals, streams and channels.

Hawaii doesn’t filter or monitor the stream runoff water going into the ocean often allowing harmful chemicals and fertilizers, fine silt that chokes out algae, plastics and other non-biodegradable items to kill our reefs, marine life and plants. Our project this day was to clean the drainage channel located near Koko Head District Park. Spanning roughly 1.5 miles toward the Kuapa Pond, this concrete ditch was literally full of a ton of dirt, palm branches, marsh grasses, plant material and rubbish.

Over 50 MC&A Associates, bolstered by a volunteer force of 15 from Malama Maunalua set into the canal at 9:30am and worked until 11:30 am. The first team, using shovels and picks, broke up and uprooted weeds, plants, debris, grass and branches from the floor of the canal. The next team gathered piles of silt, dirt and runoff for removal by the next team. The cleanup team followed both of these teams and put all the dirt and debris into garbage bags for removal from the canal. In the end we were able to clean roughly 1.25 miles of this 1.5 mile canal.

In the end, when all was put into trash bags and collected, we were able to fill 66 bags full of rubbish, dirt and debris, amounting to roughly 1,650 pounds of debris from the canal. In addition to this, was a mountain of trash that was pulled out of the canal and collected for disposal. On behalf of MC&A Inc. we also donated $1,000 to Malama Maunalua’s director Raye Decoito, which the organization will leverage to also gain roughly $13,000 in governmental grants.

It was really great to see our keiki and employees having a great time with each other. Special thanks to the members of our Employee Activity Committee team for the planning, coordination, sweat equity and going the extra mile to develop this meaningful community service project, and also create the best possible experience for all at the picnic.

Backpacks for Keiki 2013

For the 12th year in a row, the (Prudential) Locations Foundation spearheaded a campaign to give backpacks filled with school supplies to less fortunate keiki in neighborhoods across Oahu. The Locations Foundation reached out to the local business community to support this great cause.

MC&A Inc. heard the call, and are very proud to have participated in this great cause to support our island communities. On July 18th, our fantastic employees pitched in to assemble 72 bags filled with much-needed school supplies. The bags were filled with #2 pencils, pens, composition books, folder paper, glue sticks, crayons, scissor, erasers, rulers and more.

Afterwards, the bags were taken to the Locations Foundation for distribution at the beginning of August to the children when many area schools will be restarting. Foundation employees were amazed at our generosity and amount of support for our island keiki and thanked MC&A Inc. for the tremendous support.

We are happy to now offer Sea Salts of Hawai‘i’s Gourmet Cooking Salts to our gift and amenity options. A variety of different seasoned salts are available.

The salts are harvested from salt farms in the Hawaiian Islands and from ancient deep sea waters offer the Kona Coast on the Island of Hawai‘i.

Traditionally, Hawaiian sea salt was used in ceremonial blessing of outgoing canoes and to preserve abundant catches. A tradition that carries on today. A gift of salt is considered a symbol of good luck and a blessing.

‘Alea- Red ‘Alea clay was traditionally added to Hawaiian sea salt to provide extra nutrition in the diets of the native people. Its fame has spread far from the islands and gourmet chefs use it to flavor the dishes of the world.

Maritz Travel partnered with MC&A, Inc. on a program for Cisco Systems’ Chairman’s Club that recently won a prestigious Crystal Award for Exceptional Motivational Travel Program from SITE, a global network of meeting, travel and event professionals with over 2,100 members in 87 countries.

Cisco Systems is the worldwide leader in networking that transforms how people connect, communicate and collaborate. Its Chairman’s Club accomplishes many of their sales-related retention and motivation objectives: motivating and recognizing top sales people, enabling networking, and ensuring winners have exposure to senior leaders.

Fleetwood’s on Front Street Opens

Jurassic Park Roars Back to Life

MC&A recently created a Jurassic Park themed event at Kualoa Ranch, the actual filming location of the movie. Guests were treated to a tram ride through Kualoa Ranch as special VIPs of INGEN, the corporation behind the dinosaur cloning technology. They traveled through the iconic Jurassic Park gates and passed through open fields filled with giant dino eggs, nests and bones.

The tram took them up to an old science bunker filled with scientists and equipment to enjoy pupus and drinks. Afterwards, they drove down to the main campsite to enjoy a fabulous outdoor lunch. The sounds of the roaming dinosaurs could be echoing through the valley, adding to the excitement.

It was truly a fun and immersive experience that they won’t soon forget.
